CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN
Since the creation of man and woman, the fair sex has been subjected to various crimes and brutalities-from household discrimination to the plunder and rape in the wars. Some of the common ill-treatments to women are: rape, infanticides, foeticide, dowry-death,denial of basic freedom, sex related violence, domestic violence,discrimination,eve-teasing,denial of property rights etc. The crime rate against women has steadily increased during the last ten years in India. This include abuse and beating by husbands,dowry-deaths mental torture, bride burning and rape. The reasons for the rising number of incidents of crime against the fair sex are many.
Some of the vital reasons are as follow:-
1. Poor food cooked by the housewife or insufficient quantity of food cooked by her.
2. Denial of conjugal rights.
3.Insufficient dowry brought by young bride.
4.not being able to attend to the guest in the house.
5.Lack of proper support to the family of the bridegroom by the family of the bride in terms of festival gifts, cash and other items.
6. Lack of learning ability of woman due to problem of illiteracy, poor educational background and child-bearing.
7.Sexual brutality in public places against women.
Further, women face the crimes of female infanticide, acid attacks on faces, torture at home and abandonment during old age by their sons and husbands.Incidently, physical violence against women has increase in homes and in labour-dominated industry over the past 10-15 years. Bruises, broken bones, burnt faces, completely charred bodies, and deaths give the gruesome details of what could have happened to the female in our society. And why blame our society? The case of violence against females have been reported in the west as well; in UK,'rape' by a husband of his wife (who is nt willing to bow to the wishes of her husband), has been made a criminal offences. The irony is that domestic quarrels between ( and not men) committing suicide; a woman is not able to withstand mental strains for longer periods whereas man can. So,she breaks down at an early stage. This should not happened asthe battle once lost would lead to the lose of war forever. Women must never give up and must continue to fight for their rights in this crime-infested society.
The verdict of Supreme Court on workplace harassment was passed in 1997. The laws would have to be strictly enforced for stopping crimes against women. Women's organisations, UNIFEM, the national commission for women,NGOsand other government agencies would have to play vital role in this context. Indian women (especially the womenfolk of the rural areas) are illiterate. This illiteracy perpetuates poverty, backwardness, and exploitation. This vicious circle has to be broken by women themselves as men would be least interested in their liberation moves. Crimes against women are extremely high in terms of number and degree of cruelty.Legal battle would have to be fought and won. The police would have to keep a strict vigil in the urban and suburban areas. The cases of rape, murder, and abduction would have to be dealt with an iron hand. The new century must offer a battle dal for the fairer sex, else India would not be able to create a pious society that we plan to (in our country). For a better & prosperous nation, must have safe and secure environment outside and equal rights at home.Strict laws alongwith mass awareness is needed to tackle these inhuman treatments against.
